He lived in England throughout the 1930s, where he became close to Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Tobey’s most significant achievement was the development of the ‘all-over’ painting technique, a significant breakthrough, which occurred in 1935 when he was living at Dartington Hall in Devon. His new style later became known as “white writing”, and it paved the way for Abstract Expressionism in the U.S., as well as being a crucial influence on Jackson Pollock. Thomas Williams Gallery is offering the first catalogued exhibition in England since Tobey's important show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1962.
